Last Tuesday morning we were pleased to welcome back Noel Phelan to present us with a wonderful history relating to the Halvorsen family of boat builders.  All of us remember the sight of these iconic wooden cruisers on the Hawkesbury River and Sydney Harbour with many a story of family weekends on one of the rental vessels from Bobbin Head.

However not many are aware of the naval craft they manufactured during WW2 and that they built Gretel, Australia’s first challenger for the America’s Cup. They also built Freya which won back to back handicap honours three times in the Sydney to Hobart race.

On Thursday, 8 November a Music and Dance Festival took place on the Indonesian island of Flores. The event was held in the primary school “SDK Nangarasong”, approximately 30 minutes’ drive from the city of Maumere.  There were 12 schools performing, 2 of which were secondary schools and 10 primary schools with an estimated number of between 1000 and 1500 people in attendance.  The festival ran from 9am to 3pm and is the peak event in the local schools’ program.

Our club obtained a Rotary District Grant which went towards the running of this event via the Nusa Tenggara Association.

On Tuesday, 20 November we have Val Southam talking on the subject “Keep Australia Beautiful”.
