The name Tasman is an often used location name seen in many parts of Australia and New Zealand.  Ian Burnet, our speaker last Tuesday morning informed those in attendance of the voyages that Able Tasman and other Dutch mariners made in the first half of the 17th century.

The Tasman map which can be seen in the entry vestibule of the Mitchell Library, Sydney is based on sixteen separate discoveries which took place between 1606 and 1644 and shows a recognizable outline of the North, West and South coasts of what was then referred to as New Holland. It was not until the voyage of James Cook in 1770 that the East coast of the continent was chartered.

On Sunday, 6 October our club held a BBQ at Bunning’s, Artarmon and I would like to thank those members who volunteered to assist on the day and especially to Andrew Young who co-ordinated the event. Despite being held on a long weekend the steady stream of customers throughout the day ensured it was a great fundraiser for our club.

Our sales team also did a great job late in the day with their special offer of “two sausages for the price of one” after the last of the onions were cooked.

The North Sydney Seniors Expo held at Norths Club on Thursday, 10 October was the 4th annual event hosted by Trent Zimmerman MP, Rotarian and Past President of our club.  It was officially opened by former Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove who is now residing in the North Sydney area and described himself and Lady Lynn as North Sydney’s most recent retirees and was proud to welcome the large number of fellow seniors to the event.

As you will be aware our club is holding a Halloween Party at Cammeray Golf Club on Saturday, 2 November and we seeking more attendees to this event to ensure such is a success.  Please RSVP to either Cathie or Warren .

Our speaker on Tuesday, 15 October will be Sarah Ludowici and her topic will be Ultra running.
