The French sent a number of very well equipped expeditions to Australia and made a huge positive impact on the knowledge and understanding of our continent. They can also lay claim to being the first Europeans to set foot ashore in Australia, before the Dutch and well before the British. There are a number of other firsts too. This talk briefly examine 6 of these expeditions and hopefully illustrates the impact these brave people had on our knowledge of this new land.  We might, also, just, maybe have been a French colony. We will talk a little about that too.

Andrew Phippen started his professional life as a geologist but following that has spent over 20 years working for major Information Technology and Telecommunications multinationals, in sales and marketing. For last 10 years of his career he consulted to Australian companies in the export of their unique technologies to Telecommunications companies around the world.

Andrew is happily retired now and is a volunteer guide at the Australian National Maritime Museum and a volunteer crew member of the James Craig. Andrew and his wife have a sailing boat which they enjoy escaping in. They have sailed three times from Sydney to the Whitsunday Islands and back, and can highly recommend it.
