Cargo (NSW) to Harvard

Makaela Bowman is currently studying for a Bachelor of Commerce - Lib Studies and living at The Women’s College within the University of Sydney.  In 2017 she won a Sydney Academic Merit Prize and was recognised as a Beta Gamma Sigma Scholar.  In July 2017 she attended Harvard University (USA) and completed a short course on Sustainable Finance and Investing. She was awarded an “A” for her project assessing triple bottom line of investment project in an emerging economy.

Makaela will talk about her life experiences from a farm in Cargo to today including:

·       The incredible support network provided by her family. She was the first person in her family to go to university.

·       The value of working hard - from her experiences living on a farm, and the values of her family, she never felt that anything was impossible or beyond her capabilities if she committed to it.

·       The way that life never works out how you were expecting - she was offered a position at a dance school in London when she was sixteen, and after a hip injury, what she perceived as her life path completely changed

·       How her appetite for knowledge and unbounded curiosity is such an asset in adult life, even if it at times made her a bit of a pest of a child. It led to her having a wild range of experiences, and learning so much from so many different people.

·       How being the person who knows the least in the room can turn out to be such an asset because you’re unafraid to ask the ‘stupid questions’.
