How to keep your house cool in summer and warm in winter

Another hot summer …but there are things you can do to make your house more comfortable, cooler in summer and warmer winter. There are some basic principles that can be applied in the design of a new home, in choosing a home to buy, in modifying your current home or just in the way you manage the heat or the cold. This not only makes your home more comfortable but should save money on cooling and heating. These principals are based on the physics of heat flow and how the house temperature changes as a result. This talk will give a user friendly explanation and show how you can apply them.

Doug Cato has spoken before on his research with whales and on statistics. He has, however, had an interest in design of buildings for climate ever since he was a student of physics. In the early 1970s he worked at the Building Research Station in the UK where he learnt a lot about the thermal aspects of house design, even though his research was in another area. He has successfully applied the principles of design for climate to his own house.
