Why the ABC Matters

The ABC is Australia’s national public broadcaster. It is a major source of news and it provides a range of radio, TV and online programs designed to inform, educate and entertain. It has been called the ‘voice of Australia’ and is broadly regarded as a national treasure. It is one of Australia’s most trusted institutions. The ABC costs around $1.1 billion pa and this represents 0.2% of Federal Government Expenditure (approx. $500b pa). The ABC faces some major challenges: it has suffered significant funding cuts for many years; there are calls for it to be privatised; there has been a history of political interference and, most recently, its offices have been raided by the AFP and documents seized. Media across Australia have been united in their condemnation of these actions which threaten to muzzle investigative journalism. Indeed, governments around the world have recently pledged their commitment to upholding the freedom of the press as indispensable to sustaining a healthy democracy. Australia appears out of step.

And to inform the Australian public about issues affecting the national public broadcaster.
