A Good Death

Margaret Rice
is an accomplished journalist, author, feature writer, key note speaker and editor, mostly specialising as a medical writer. She has written for The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian and The Good Weekend. She is the author of A Good Death: a compassionate and practical guide to prepare for the end of life.  She also manages the website good-grief.com.au, which is designed to increase our everyday understanding of death and grief. Margaret offers essential advice and coping strategies to help overcome our culture’s fear of this natural process.

She will start broad and wide, canvassing all 11 suggestions in her book for taking more control so you can have a better death.  Of the 11, the one that’s generating most questions is Step Nine – “plan ahead, taking what we’ve learned and applying practical steps, to help ourselves and to help others”.

She will illustrate this one by getting people to imagine they are taking an A4 sheet of paper, folding it in half then folding it in half again, so they’ve got four squares. These represent four ‘legal’/practical steps - 1) prepare a will, 2) assign your power of attorney, 3) determine who your enduring guardian is and then 4) write your advance care directive.
